Actinopterygii (Actinopterygii Cope, 1887) are a class of vertebrates that includes most living bony fishes. Their name derives from the Greek aktis = ray + pterygion, diminutive of pteryx = wing, and refers to their main common characteristic: fins supported by rays.

Their main characteristic, also suggested by their name, is their fins supported by rays. These rays (lepidotrichia) are articulated with several parallel bony or cartilaginous elements, called radials, which differentiates them from fleshy-finned fishes (Sarcopterygii).

Another characteristic of this class is the presence of a swim bladder, a modified lung sac containing a gas mixture, which allows for sophisticated adjustment of their hydrodynamic trim.

Actinopterygians also share a light, flexible covering of scales, made up of thin bony plates.

Beyond these common characteristics, they exhibit a wide variety of shapes.
