It has an oval body, laterally compressed and high, skin with small and smooth scales (127 along the lateral line, which is curved above the pectoral fins). The head has a short and rounded snout. The eyes are not very large and carry an adipose eyelid. The mouth, small and oblique, is slightly protractile and the lower jaw is just a little more protruding than the upper one. Distribution and habitat

It is pelagic but purely coastal, it is usually found on sandy substrates but it is not an imperative. In winter it is more offshore.
