Distribution and habitat

The perch is widespread along the coastal strip of the eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the English Channel to the Cape of Good Hope, including the Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands. It is very common in the Mediterranean and is present in the Black Sea. It is uncertain whether it is also present in the Red Sea due to immigration from the Mediterranean.

It lives on rocky seabeds and Posidonia oceanica meadows. In deep waters, it can also inhabit sandy or muddy bottoms. It is usually a strictly coastal fish but can be found at depths of up to 500 meters.

Description

The body is elongated, round in cross-section, with a pointed snout. The mouth is very wide, equipped with small teeth and fleshy lips. The eyes are large. The dorsal fin has a first section composed of 10 dorsal spines, while the terminal section is composed of soft rays and is rounded. The ventral and pectoral fins are large and rounded. The caudal fin is slightly forked. The scales are quite small.

The color pattern is quite variable and consists of a light brown or reddish brown background, streaked vertically with 7-8 broad, irregular reddish-brown bands of varying darker shades, and horizontally with 1-3 regular orange or golden lines that continue obliquely on the fish’s head. A light longitudinal band runs along the middle of the body. The fins are yellowish.
