Description
The Caesionidae are phylogenetically close to the Lutjanidae with respect to which they show a certain adaptation to a pelagic lifestyle and to a planctofaga feeding. These fish have a poorly compressed oval body on the sides, fusiform. The mouth is small but can extend to a tube to capture prey. The dorsal fin is unique, with the front part with spiny rays. The anal fin has 3 spiny rays.
The pectoral and ventral fins are of medium size. The caudal fin is deeply forked and is carried by a rather thin caudal peduncle. The color is lively, usually the base is bright blue with dark bands and stripes and golden, yellow and sometimes red spots. Often the apices of the caudal fin lobes are dark. The dimensions rarely exceed 40 cm.
Biology
