Blue Damselfish - Chromis chromis

Pesci Blu Elettrico – Chromis chromis – intotneblue.it
It’s always a pleasure to dive among this cloud of electric blue fish. They are the fry of the damselfish (Chromis chromis), the small specimens in fact have an electric blue livery. As babies, they are photophobic, meaning they cannot tolerate sunlight, which is why it’s common to find them in dark caves, crevices, or any shaded areas away from sunlight.

As they grow, they change color, changing from their splendid fluorescent blue to black. As fry, they live in schools like adults, but on the seabed, always near caves where they can shelter from predators. They are not fearful of humans, although they swim with lightning-fast dashes when they approach them. In reality, they don’t flee; this is probably their schooling strategy to confuse predators. As adults, they live throughout the water column, always on rocky bottoms or near wrecks and submerged reefs.
