Mucilage - Sea Snot
Andrea Cirivasi
We have already published in other articles the culmination of the formation of mucilage in this stretch of sea, in this case probably the mucilage was forming and one of the causes of this explosion is certainly the heating of the water temperature.
To date (05 June 2021) in the same area it has not yet been seen, perhaps because the sea temperature and climatic conditions are not yet ideal for the proliferation of this alga.
Returning to the video, the only areas in which the mucilage fails to thrive are the caves and vertical rock walls, i.e. those areas not exposed to sunlight, for the rest we can see that the mucilage is found practically everywhere, threatening the development of endemic algae, suffocating the polyps of gorgonians and corals, thus threatening a very delicate ecosystem and the entire food chain connected to it.
The proliferation of mucilage is a phenomenon by now sadly well known, if before these explosions were cyclical over several years, today it seems a phenomenon that recurs regularly every year and that we will try to document as far as possible.
