We met these needlefish in the waters of the Elba Island, near the beach of Fetovaia. We are at the end of August, the period in which it is easier to meet these very funny fish, who approach the coasts in search of food.

In the video, in fact, you can see a Garfish or Needlefish in the hunt trying to catch some little fishes, small fish that it feeds near the coast. The Aguglia is a pelagic fish that spends most of its life in large schools in the open sea.

In spring and late summer, however, early autumn approaches the coast to hunt, and then the herds separate into a few individuals. Together he obviously carries with him other predators like the Carangidi type Lecce and Ricciole but also Tonni of which he becomes prey.

Garfish (Belone belone), also known as the garpike or sea needle, is a pelagicoceanodromous needlefish found in brackish and marine waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the MediterraneanCaribbeanBlack, and Baltic Seas.

Description

These fish have a tapered, almost eel-like shape, with fins in the back, the needle has a horny beak with a longer mandible than the jaw, very flexible. The skeleton is blue-green in color, the color of the bone is due to biliverdin deposits, a product of bile. The livery is of a simple silvery gray, dark on the back and almost white on the belly. It reaches a length of 90 cm and a maximum weight of 1.3 kg.

Biology Supply It feeds on small fish, mainly sardines and anchovies.

Distribution and habitat Belone belone is commonly found in the Mediterranean Sea and in the eastern Atlantic, in the coastal areas around the Canary Islands, the Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde, as well as in the Black Sea and the Azov Sea; Belone svetovidovi only in the eastern Atlantic and in the Mediterranean around the Strait of Gibraltar.
