Too many fishing nets lost

The marine environment is affected by all kinds of pollution that has always been caused by human activities but from the industrial era to the present day it has developed exponentially to the point that we may consider not to return. A human activity in direct contact with the sea is certainly represented by professional fishing. Too many fishing nets lost!!! Fishing is generally practiced by trawl nets or fishing net. The fishing net is certainly the most compatible because it is practiced selectively and more respectful to the environment. troppe le reti perse

However, fishermen in order to achieve greater quantities of fish tend to get closer to the sunken cliffs, where fish usually find refuge and the possibility of breeding, but so often they “grab” with their nets the reef and to abandon them on the seabed. The lost nets continue to fish for a long time and the animals remain trapped. These nets long some kilometers envelop entire stretches of rock with damage that is not difficult to imagine. troppe le reti perse

These “ghost nets” are a real problem for the entire marine ecosystem because they are made of nylon. A material that is not biodegradable: it can only be recycled following particular treatments and therefore creates significant pollution in the sea. Furthermore, as we have already said, it continues its fishing activity and therefore the killing of marine animals for many years.

The video shows a fishing net that has been on the bottom of a beautiful Mediterranean Sea cliff for many years and shows you the lobsters that live nearby and that could get close and get trapped. In recent years, fish nets made of biodegradable material have been developed which, if abandoned, degrade in two or three years, but have a significantly higher production cost than nylon nets and their duration is shorter so there is no currently no interest on the part of fishermen to provide for their purchase. An intervention by the authorities is therefore necessary in order to incentivize their purchase with appropriate concessions and at the same time prohibit the sale of nets made of non-biodegradable material.
