Deadly Ambushes at Sea

I shot this video in a submerged reef of Vada lighthouse near Livorno. The images show a marine life full of biodiversity typical of the Mediterranean Sea with many fish and in particular a notable presence of red Scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa) of various sizes and therefore of different ages. The red Scorpionfish is recognized by all the other scorpionfishes for the considerable size it reaches and for its body peculiarities, with fleshy appendages on the chin, along the sides and on the eyes. Its head is massive, thorny and covered with skin appendages. agguati mortali in mare

The color is usually bright red but can also be pink, brown or sulfur yellow, variegated with dark in various ways and, generally, with a black spot in the center of the dorsal fin. It can reach 50 cm in length and about 3/4 kg in weight. It lives on rocky bottoms and its habits are extremely territorial, to the point that it is possible to dive and observe the same specimens for years in the same place, chosen as a home and at the same time as a hunting area. agguati mortali in mare

Thanks to its coloring and body conformation, it manages to blend perfectly with the environment in which it is found and spends most of its time still motionless in a raised point of the seabed waiting for a prey to pass in front of it. Its technique of capturing is very fast and effective, and is based on a sudden jerk forward combined with the projecting forward of the great jaws in a movement that does not give a chance to the prey itself, as you can see from this beautiful video that captures the moment of the deadly ambush.

It is the struggle for life! As we know, the big fish eats small fish, probably the weakest one, also carrying out a natural selection and a biological balance that has always occurred in a bloody way in nature. Unless human intervention, as more and more often happens in recent years, does not interrupt the biological cycle and thus create imbalances in nature which, as we know, eventually backfire the human.

Finally, an unexpected surprise at the end of the dive. The weather conditions have changed and as you can see it is raining…! For the diver it is not a big problem … but for those who provide assistance on board the boat, yes! The sea is also this.
