Red Scorpionfish - Scorpaena scrofa
Filming and photographing the Red Scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa) is always a great satisfaction, in fact this species seems to be the perfect subject of the underwater photographer, despite the proximity of the diver, it trusts so much in its mimicry that it gets very close. The problem is that to film it you have to find it first! In this case, the lights mounted on the camera came to our aid which brought out its red, orange and yellow colors; hidden by the depth of blue.
We are on a depth of about 39/42 meters, where the sunlight is deeply filtered so that some frequencies are blocked and therefore it is possible to see all the colors of the seabed and of the various marine species only thanks to powerful artificial lights.
In this video you can also see the reaction speed of this fish, statuesque and motionless it almost seems that you can touch it, in reality the Redfish is always alert and as soon as it decides that the intruder has invaded its proxemics it makes itself safe with a very fast shot that these new formidable action-cams are able to capture by slowing down the movie even up to ten times.
The Redfish (Scorpaena scrofa Linnaeus, 1758), better known as Red Scorpionfish, is a fish of the Scorpaenidae family.
Distribution and habitat It is widespread in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the British Isles, to Morocco, the Canaries, the Azores and the Mediterranean Sea. It lives on hard, rocky or coralligenous bottoms, usually at a depth greater than 20 m (up to over 200 m) even if the young can be met in shallower waters. It has a predilection for rocky shoals that rise from a muddy bottom, but it is also found in reef environments of all kinds and on loose bottoms made up of sand, mud and debris. Its habitat is very varied and its habits extremely territorial, to the point that it is possible to dive and observe the same specimens for years in the same place, chosen as a home and at the same time as a hunting area.
