Atlantic Goliath Grouper
Atlantic Goliath Grouper or itajara (Epinephelus itajara), also known as the jewfish, is a large saltwater fish of the grouper family which is found primarily in tropical waters among coral and artificial reefs at depths from 5 to 50 m. It can reach 2.5 meters in length and 360 kg in weight. The Grouper belongs to the family of the Serranidae, subfamily Epinephelinae and includes numerous species of saltwater fish; they are large fish, which generally live in depth and are appreciated for their prized meats. It is a protogynous hermaphrodite fish that lives for a long time, some estimate even over 50 years, and that becomes male around the age of 12. The species can be found in the West Atlantic ranging from northeastern Florida, south throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, and along South America to Brazil. In the East Pacific it ranges from Mexico to Peru. In the East Atlantic, the species ranges in West Africa from Senegal to Cabinda.
